What you need to know about your banana tree.

Just bought a banana tree for $10. Eventhough, there is no room for my existing plants in our balcony, I bought it. Simply, I couldn't resist it for such price 😋
Of coarse, I don't want to kill it, that's why I took some notes about the culture of the banana tree from different sources.
Banana tree Musa (Musaceae) is a large herbaceous plant; the leaf sheaths form of so-called pseudotrunk. Initially the leaves are entire, but after they uncurl wind and weather tear the edges along the lateral veins.
The banana tree requires plenty of light, even in the winder months. Keep your plant outdoor in the sommer months. Once the night temperature drops to 10*C take it inside. Use an artificial lighting when your plant is indoor. Try to provide it with at least 50% humidity.
A great deal of of moisture is evaporated and if the foliage turns brown the cause may nearly always be found to be a shortage of water. Roomy pots with self-watering systems are recommended.
Since the banana tree continues growing in winter , it must be fed once a week or every two weeks.
This is a vigorous plant and a young specimen must therefore be repotted several times until it ends up in a large plastic container. The best potting medium consists of  1/3 clay or loam, 1/3 leaf mold or conifer needle compost, and 1/3 rotted cow manure. The pots or tubs must have good drainage.
The banana tree may be propagated by removing the suckers , which appear at the base of the mother plant.
Repot a growing banana whenever it becomes seriously pot bound. Move a banana in a 1 gallon container up to a 3 gallon container, and one in a 3 gallon container up to a 5 gallon container. Do not put bananas in a much larger pot because they perform at their best when just slightly pot-bound. Remove any side shoots when repotting and whenever you notice them emerging from the soil.
