Dendrobiums. General Facts

There are over a 1000 species of Dendrobiums from SE Asia.
Wide distribution from Pacific Islands to Hhimalayas; found in India, Burma, Malaysia, Southern China & Japan. All Dendrobiums are epiphytes (dendros - tree, bios - life)
All Dendrobiums resent being overpotted. Most Dendrobiums need their roots to dry out between waterings.
They come from different altitudes, Find out country of origin, altitude : mountain? lowland? seaside?, and whether seasonal changes, because many need warm moist summer, and dry cool winter.
There are 11 culture groups of Dendrobiums.
1/. Phalaenopsis.
Light: medium to bright light all year round.
Temperature: warm - over 15C at night
Water: slightly reduce water in fall

2/. Antelope.
Light: bright light like Cattleyas.
Temperature: warm - over 15C at night
Water: a lot in summer, slightly reduce water in fall

3/. Nobile (cool growing), There are some of them are warm growing.
Light: medium to bright light in summer.
Temperature: warm in summer, cool to cold in winter
Water: water&fertilizer - a lot in summer, winter rest (no food, little water) The warmer growing Nobiles don't need cold nights to flower.

4/Latouria 
Light:  bright light.
Temperature: warm all year round
Water: water all year, no winter rest.

5/. Callista.
Light: bright light in summer and winter.
Temperature: warm, moist summer
Water: a lot in summer, slightly reduce water in fall, dry winter rest (don't shrivel pseudobulbs)

6/. Formosae (nigrohirsute).
Light: medium to bright light all year round.
Temperature: warm, although infidibulum, scrabilingue, sanderae need cool winter
Water: water thoroughly all year round, with only a short, dry rest of 2-3 weeks

7/. Australian hard canes.
Light: bright light all year round
Temperature: warm, moist summer, dry cold winter (some will tolerate freezing)
Water: a lot in summer, slightly reduce water in fall, dry winter rest (don't shrivel pseudobulbs). don't fertilize in winter.

8/. Pedilonum/Calyptrochilus.
Light: bright light all year round
Temperature: cool
Water: water when actively growing, winter rest.

9/. Oxyglossum.
Light: fairly high
Temperature: 24C day, 8C night; cool to cold year round at night
Water: pure water. Water year round, no winter rest

10/. Dockrillia.
Light: bright light all year round & high humidity
Temperature: warm in summer, cool (+10C) in winter
Water: regular watering & fertilizing, dry winter rest

11/. Aporum.
Light: bright light all year round
Temperature: warm. Very intolerant of cold
Water: Water year round, never let dry out
