For me it is always a nerve-wracking situation to leave my lovely green babies under the care of a friend or neighbor who will water them to death piously believing that it is for the better. Each time, instead of enjoying a vacation, I'm thinking whether my plants will survive or not. It is simply not an option to bring your plants with you. Also, all gardeners know that it is not easy to take care of indoor plants unless you know their optimal conditions of watering and temperature requirements. Unfortunately, I have lost some of my plants already, can you envision this heart breaking moment?
So, if you have plants, sooner or later, you will have no choice but to leave them in the hands of a hopefully capable caretaker.
However, let's do not judge our friends and neighbors. I want to help you, and maybe one day you will help me.
What you should do?
It is essential to give detailed instructions. Even a competent plant-person does not know what your plants are used to, and will need some guidance. Write down a list of the locations of the plants that need a particular attention, and how frequently they need to be watered. Then, give an idea of how much to water each time since over-watering and under-watering can be equally damaging, especially over a longer period of time. Make sure to give details for any plants that are sensitive and require a special treatment. If you want to be extra cautious, encourage your plant-sitter to contact you if anything goes wrong.
